Romney
About
Heather Romney studied art at the University of Utah and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Originally trained as a photographer, she worked for several years as a professional printer. She was a founding member of Smelling Salt Amusements, an artist collective that created multi-media performance pieces, printed objects, set design, video workshops and DJ sets in the United States and in Berlin, Germany. She taught Art and Technology in high school in Baltimore for seventeen years. In 2017, she returned to her own studio practice and began painting.
Her current work explores the mountains and other geological formations that have emerged from the bed of Lake Bonneville, a late Pleistocene paleolake that once covered much of western Utah. She visits that geography using Google Earth, capturing screenshots of the terrain from multiple perspectives. From these screenshots, she builds digital collages and then paints the new scenes in oil. Though the resulting views may seem familiar, they are imaginary and cannot be seen from any single vantage point in the physical world.
Heather splits her time between southwestern Colorado, Maryland, and Cyprus. Her work is held in private collections throughout the United States.
